The Nowy Targ Branch of the State Archive in Cracow was created in 1952 as a County State Archive in Nowy Targ (1952-1975), until 1957 subordinate to the Provincial Archive in Cracow and then to the State Archive of the City and Province of Cracow. The Provincial State Archive in Nowy Sącz based in Nowy Targ, was created in 1976. After the implementation of the Act of 14 July 1983 about the national archival collection and archives, the outpost in Nowy Targ again became a branch of the State Archive in Cracow.

Since the beginnings of the Nowy Targ branch, its archival collection has grown steadily. The organiser and first manager of the County Archive in Nowy Targ, Dr Józef Grzybek, managed the collection of archival material.
